A Girl of the Sixties

A Girl of the Sixties by Bessie MacNicol (1869-1904).

MacNichol was perhaps the most important woman painter in Glasgow at the start of the 20th century. This oil painting was probably created around 1899, the year of her marriage. It depicts a young girl dressed in the fashions of the 1860s, wearing a crinoline and a pillbox hat and with her hair dressed in a chignon. MacNicol loved these outmoded clothes and often painted women wearing them. The painting also illustrates another of MacNicol's fascinations - young women posing in dappled sunlight which is filtered through the overhead branches of trees.
