Cardinal Winning

The Most Reverend Thomas Winning (1925-2001), Archbishop of Glasgow, photographed with the Lord Provost's Loving Cup in Glasgow City Council's newspaper The Bulletin in May 1982. The award was made to Archbishop Winning in recognition of the role he played in organising the visit of Pope John Paul II to the United Kingdom that year. One of the highlights of the tour was the Pope's mass in Bellahouston Park, which brought Glasgow worldwide publicity.

Thomas Winning was only 49 when he became Archbishop of Glasgow. In 1994 he made history when he joined the elite of the Pope's closest advisers, Glasgow's first cardinal and only the third Scottish cardinal since the Reformation. Thousands of pilgrims travelled to Rome for the occasion. Cardinal Winning raised the voice of the Catholic Church and community to new levels in Scotland. A supporter of reform on social issues such as poverty, he was uncompromisingly conservative on moral issues such as abortion and homosexuality.
