The Literary and Artistic Club photographed in 1856 by Duncan Brown.
This photograph was probably taken at Crookston Castle, which Brown is known to have visited in 1856. The Literary and Artistic Club frequently went on rambles in and around Glasgow, and many of their walks were recorded in Rambles Round Glasgow by Hugh Macdonald. The modern-day rambler would be appalled at the prospect of walking several miles in a frock coat, waistcoat and a chimney pot hat!
Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
