Christmas lights, 1965

The Christmas lights in George Square, 1965, with Lord Provost John Johnston (1898-1979).

John Johnston was born in 1898, the son of a Polmadie policeman. After leaving school he went to work as a railway clerk, but when the First World War broke out he enlisted in the 6th Battalion Highland Light Infantry. He was still under recruitment age and was sent home when the truth was discovered.

Johnston was first elected as a Labour councillor for the Govanhill ward in 1945. In 1949 he was returned for the Parkhead ward where he served until 1969. He became Lord Provost in November 1965 and remained in office until May 1969 when he retired from politics.
