Colliery workers

Surface workers (apparently engineers and mechanics) at Bredisholm Collieries, Baillieston, c 1890.

Although now part of Baillieston, Bredisholm was originally a small hamlet which in the 18th century had an economy based mainly on farming and weaving. From the end of the century the Monklands mining industry grew quickly, encouraged by the growth in demand for coal to heat Glasgow homes and power the city's industries, and by the opening of the Monkland Canal and new railways. The rural character of Bredisholm and the surrounding area changed as local men went to work at the mines and there was a flood of incomers looking for employment. By the early 20th century the population of Baillieston had risen to almost 4,000 people.
