An engagement card for the Eighth Annual Ball of the Glasgow Grain and Provision Trade which was held on 8 December 1858 at the City Halls in Candleriggs.
Inside the engagement card is a list of all the dances for the evening, such as waltzes, polkas, reels and quadrilles. Opposite each dance is a blank space where one would enter the name of one's partner for that dance. It was not "the done thing" to partner the same person in many dances, and to do so would immediately set tongues wagging.
