Coloured cartoon from the Northern Looking Glass 17 September 1825, entitled "Consumption of Smoke: Future". Having depicted the dreadful conditions of Glasgow in the accompanying cartoon " ...Present", the cartoonist sets out to show how the city's Superintendent of Public Works, James Cleland, envisages a Glasgow in which his advice on controlling smoke emissions is followed.
Happy citizens stroll in the clear air, admiring abundant vegetation and bird life. One bird roosts contentedly in its nest on a factory chimney.
