Advertisements from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1853-1854 for the stationer Duncan Campbell, S Robertson's widows' caps and Themans, Brothers & Co, tobacco importers and manufacturers.
Widows' caps were essential items for women in mourning, and it was common for middle and upper class women to remain in mourning for at least a year after the death of a husband. Queen Victoria famously wore mourning clothes from Prince Albert's death in 1861 until her own death forty years later.
