An advertisement from the Post Office Glasgow directory of 1847-1848 for the Glasgow Institution for the Education of Young Ladies in Blythswood Square.

The school provided instruction in a number of subjects which would have been deemed useful to young middle class women of the day, to assist them in the management of the household and to broaden the mind at a time when women were not normally expected to pursue academic studies. The teachers are all men, and the role of the six governesses is apparently confined to instruction in needlework.
