The impressive Canadian Pavilion at the International Exhibition of 1901 reflected the status of the Dominion of Canada as one of the most important countries of the British Empire. Scottish immigrants had already played a significant role in the country's development and it was hoped that more would be attracted by the Canadian contribution to the Exhibition.
At a time when the Boer War was continuing in South Africa, the Exhibition's international section placed special emphasis on the countries of the Empire. Australia, India, Rhodesia and Ceylon were prominently represented. One of the most popular attractions was a display of captured Boer guns outside the Industrial Hall.
