Bridgeton Cross, 1930s

Men gathered at the "Bridgeton Umbrella" at Bridgeton Cross in the 1930s.

The Bridgeton Umbrella is a cast iron shelter erected on an island site at the cross in 1875 and became a popular meeting place in the 1930s. The minister at the back of this crowd is standing head and shoulders above the crowd, perhaps literally on a soap box. His audience of men and boys (many of whom appear to be of short stature)is ignoring him, or perhaps they have been distracted by the photographer.
