Cardium

Fossil cockles (Cardium) from Bellahouston. They date from between 14,500 to 13,000 BP (Before Present - the equivalent of 12,500-11,000 BC), when parts of the Glasgow area lay under the sea. Cockles can still be found along the sea shores of Scotland today.

The remains of a variety of sea creatures can be found in marine clay. Scientists can tell that the sea was much colder then than it is today, because some of the fossils belong to species which are currently found in cold waters.
