A Thomas Annan photograph of a portrait of John Campbell, Second Marquis of Breadalbane (1796-1862). Campbell was MP for Okehampton 1820-1826 and for Perthshire, 1832. The painting was by J M Barclay.
Campbell succeeded as marquis and inherited an estate of nearly half a million acres in Perthshire and Argyll in 1834 at the age of 38. He was elected Lord Rector of the University of Glasgow in 1841, and seven years later sworn in as a member of the Scottish Privy Council and appointed Lord Chamberlain. Campbell served in this post until 1852 and again between 1853 and 1858.
