The Close Theatre Club had a capacity of 152 and a membership of 2,500 including many local celebrities. Opened in 1965 next door to the Citizens' Theatre in Gorbals Street, it provided a stage for plays which would not otherwise have been commercially viable. Additional activities were late night films, poetry readings and theatre workshops.
The Close Theatre Club lived up to its name in 1973 when it was destroyed by fire.
