Anne Carmichael was the third daughter of John, 1st Earl of Hyndford (1638-1710) who was Secretary of State from 1696 until 1702, a Chancellor of the University of Glasgow and a supporter of the Act of Union. She married Sir John Maxwell, 2nd Baronet of Nether Pollok (1686-1752) in 1709. The couple had two daughters and a son, John, who inherited Pollok Estate from his father in 1752 but died unmarried six years later.
