Staff at work in the packing hall of the boot and shoe warehouse of Bayne & Duckett at the corner of Brunswick Street and Wilson Street. The photograph is taken from a booklet issued by the firm on the occasion of the opening of the warehouse in 1928.
The packing hall was located in the basement. Two chutes, one for the packing room and one for the parcels counter on the ground floor, ensured rapid and safe transmission of goods from the warehouse to the forwarding departments. Every floor was accessed by the chutes, from the repairing factory on the top floor downwards.
