"Football as it may be seen any Saturday at the South Side Park", a cartoon published in The Bailie of 15 October 1890. The location may be Queen's Park Recreation Ground, and the building on the left the Victoria Infirmary (opened on 14 February 1890.
Queen's Park FC, Britain's oldest football club, was founded in 1867 and played in the park. The popularity of the game grew rapidly in the city, and this cartoon depicts the organised chaos that resulted from several games proceeding in close proximity on municipal pitches. Note that the goalkeepers appear to wear the same jerseys as their out-field team mates.
There are crowds on the touchlines and an on-looker has encroached on the pitch to give a player a piece of his mind. Only one woman appears in the cartoon, at the bottom, centre. Her male companion has lost his hat, after being struck by a ball.
