Saturday Evening Dance

Heads turn to the camera at a Saturday evening dance at Glasgow and West of Scotland Commercial College, c 1949. The dance band is at the far end of the hall. The surroundings had less happy associations for some students, as the hall was also used for examinations.

Dancing was an extremely popular pastime in Glasgow in the years following the Second World War. Going to a dance on a Saturday night was second nature to many young people. Live music was the order of the day, with dance bands in heavy demand. There was usually a master of ceremonies at the microphone, to announce what the next dance would be. No alcohol was served, although it was not unknown for bottles to be smuggled into dance halls.
