First elected to the House of Commons in 1948, Jenkins served as Aviation Minister, Home Secretary and Chancellor of the Exchequer in the Labour Government of the 1960s. He resigned from the Labour Party in 1976 and took up his post in Brussels. On his return in 1981 he was one of the "Gang of Four" former Labour MPs who founded the Social Democratic Party.
The death of Glasgow's last Conservative MP, Tam Galbraith, in 1982 caused a by-election in his Hillhead constituency. Jenkins won the seat for the SDP. A celebrated bon viveur, he was very much at home in the West End and happy to promote the attractions of his adopted city. He held the seat until 1987, when he was defeated by George Galloway. He went to the House of Lords, taking the title Lord Jenkins of Hillhead.
