James Finlayson

A Thomas Annan photograph of James Finlayson (1840-1906), President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1900-1903 and the honorary librarian 1877-1901.

Following five years with his father's soft goods manufacturing firm of McLean & Finlayson, James studied medicine at Anderson's University in 1862 and went on to graduate from the University of Glasgow in 1867. He received his MD two years later. In 1875 he was appointed Physician to the Western Infirmary, a position which he occupied until his death in 1906. In 1883 Finlayson also took up the position of Physician to the newly-opened Glasgow Royal Hospital for Sick Children in Garnethill.

Finlayson published many medical works during his life the most significant of which was his Clinical Manual for the Study of Medical Cases (1878). In 1889 he published a study of the life of Maister Peter Lowe and eight years later a similar work on Dr Robert Watt.
