Hector Clare Cameron

A portrait by George Henry of Sir Hector Clare Cameron (1843-1929) President of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow between 1897 and 1900.

Cameron was the son of a sugar planter who graduated MD from the University of Glasgow and in 1867 served as Joseph Lister's assistant in the Glasgow Royal Infirmary. Cameron became a visiting surgeon at the Royal in 1873. In 1881 he became a surgeon at Glasgow Western Infirmary and became Professor of Clinical Surgery at the University of Glasgow from 1900 until his retirement in 1910. He was recognised as a brilliant surgeon and an inspiring teacher.

Cameron became a Fellow of the Faculty of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow in 1878 and represented the institution on the General Medical Council for 15 years.
