Andrew Freeland Fergus

A portrait by Charles R Dowell of the ophthalmologist Andrew Freeland Fergus (1858-1932).

Freeland Fergus graduated MD from the University of Glasgow in 1891. After studying in Utrecht and Paris he returned to Glasgow to become an assistant surgeon in the Glasgow Eye Infirmary in 1882. He became a full surgeon eight years later and held the post until 1919.

Fergus was Professor of Ophthalmic Medicine and Surgery at Anderson's College of Medicine between 1909 to 1915. Like his father, Andrew Fergus (1822-1887), he became President of the President of the Royal College of Physicians and Surgeons of Glasgow, 1918-1921. He was also a President of the Royal Philosophical Society of Glasgow and was awarded the honorary degree of LLD by the University of Glasgow in 1921.
