A photograph by Thomas Annan of the top third of a three-quarter length portrait of William Hunter (1718-1783). The painting was painted by Sir Joshua Reynolds and is held by the University of Glasgow's Hunterian Museum.
Hunter was a distinguished anatomist and physician who bequeathed his collections of art, coins, anatomical and natural history specimens and 10,000 books to the University of Glasgow. In 1807 the collections were housed in the University's Hunterian Museum, Scotland's first public museum.
