A bedroom in the Mackintosh House at the Hunterian Art Gallery.
In 1916 Charles Rennie Mackintosh was asked by the renowned model-maker WJ Bassett-Lowke to remodel his house at 78 Derngate, Northampton. This was Mackintosh's only domestic commission outside of Scotland and illustrates the latter stages of his career as an interior designer. His progression from the curvilinear "Glasgow Style" to a rectilinear style reflecting European modernism is clear in the design for the guest bedroom at Derngate, which was decorated with bold ultramarine, black and white stripes and finished with matching furnishings.
This striking bedroom was recreated by the University of Glasgow as part of the displays in the Mackintosh House, which opened in the Hunterian Art Gallery in 1981. The other interiors are recreations of rooms in the house in nearby Southpark Avenue where Mackintosh lived with his wife from 1906 to 1914.
