Centre for Political Song

Former Glasgow MEP Janey Buchan, left, with members of staff at the launch of the Centre for Political Song at Glasgow Caledonian University in January 2001.

The Centre is the only one of its kind in the world. Buchan had the original idea for the Centre and donated much of the original collection. "Political song" refers to any song containing a political thread. The genre includes, for example, protest songs, campaign songs, songs providing a social commentary or supporting a historical narrative, songs of the labour movement, traditional patriotic songs and political parodies. The Centre provides a valuable cultural resource as well as offering a programme of events such as seminars, lectures, community workshops, exhibitions and concerts.

Janey Buchan also donated to Glasgow Caledonian University the Norman and Janey Buchan Collection, a collection of several thousand books and pamphlets mostly covering the period 1910-1980. Although mainly related to the labour movement, the wide range of subjects covered in the collection represents the eclectic interests of the former owners.
