Playground Football, 1955

Pupils at Kennedy Street Junior School playing football in the boys' playground, 1955. The goalposts consist of poles on which the boys have hung their blazers. A wall and a high fence topped with barbed wire separates the playground from the tenement backcourts beyond.

Junior schools were intended for children believed to be less academically-inclined, and only offered schooling up the official leaving age. The boys shown here would have left school at the age of 15 to find work.

In 1955 Partick Camera Club set out to create a photographic survey of Glasgow. As the project progressed, other camera clubs joined and each was allocated a district of the city to photograph. Glasgow Museums exhibited the photographs at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and at the People's Place, and in 1956 the exhibition was shown at the Palace of Art in Bellahouston Park. The photographs are now part of Glasgow Museums' collections.
