Corner of Dowanside and Byres Roads

The view from Dowanside Street looking east across Byres Road to Ashton Road, 1955.

The University of Glasgow tower looms in the distance, over the roofs of Ashton Road's tenements. In the foreground, next to the post box, a number of people are clustered round a street trader who appears to be selling goods from trays on the ground.

The erection of the Boyd Orr Building in 1971 blocked off this view off the University tower.

In 1955 Partick Camera Club set out to create a photographic survey of Glasgow. As the project progressed, other camera clubs joined and each was allocated a district of the city to photograph. Glasgow Museums exhibited the photographs at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and at the People's Place, and in 1956 the exhibition was shown at the Palace of Art in Bellahouston Park. The photographs are now part of Glasgow Museums' collections.
