Education at the Art Galleries

An art class at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum, 1955.

The Museum's Education Department offered art classes for both primary and secondary schools. In addition, experimental art classes were run for pre-school children and for pupils at Nerston Child Guidance Residential School. In 1955 the Saturday art class was in its tenth year and had become so popular that numbers had to be restricted. An exhibition of the paintings produced in the class was held in September, while the annual exhibition of art made by city schoolchildren was in its 51st year. In 2004, the exhibition is still going strong!

In 1955 Partick Camera Club set out to create a photographic survey of Glasgow. As the project progressed, other camera clubs joined and each was allocated a district of the city to photograph. Glasgow Museums exhibited the photographs at Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum and at the People's Place, and in 1956 the exhibition was shown at the Palace of Art in Bellahouston Park. The photographs are now part of Glasgow Museums' collections.
