A portrait of Sir John Maxwell 2nd Baronet (1686-1752) by an unknown artist.
Sir John Maxwell of Blawarthill inherited Nether Pollok from his cousin Sir John Maxwell (1648-1732) in 1732. The second baronet kept up with fashions of his day, building a modern mansion, Pollok House, and sending his son on a Grand Tour of Europe. He also encouraged industrial developments on his estates and granted a feu for a printfield, stimulating the development of Pollokshaws as an industrial village.
Sir John married three times, and portraits of his first two wives Anne Carmichael (d 1720) and Barbara Stewart (d 1737) are also on this website.
