Lady Hannah Maxwell

A portrait of Lady Hannah Ann Gardiner Maxwell (1764-1841), perhaps by David Martin (1727-1797).

Born in Lincolnshire, Lady Hannah married Sir John Maxwell the 7th Baronet of Pollok (1768-1844) in 1788. The couple lived at Sir John's mansion, Pollok House. Sir John and Lady Hannah were political radicals and supported the Whig Party. Although women could not take an active role in politics, Lady Hannah did all that she could to support her husband's ambitions.

Lady Hannah had one son, John (1791-1865), who became the 8th Baronet in 1844, and three daughters: Harriet (1789-1841), Elizabeth (1793-1822) and Mary (who died in infancy). Harriet remained single, but Elizabeth married Archibald Stirling of Keir (1769-1847) and their son William Stirling Maxwell (1818-1878) later became the 9th Baronet.
