Lady Barbara Maxwell

A portrait of Lady Barbara Maxwell (d 1737) by an unknown artist.

Lady Barbara was the daughter of Walter Stewart (or Steuart) of Stewarthall. She married Sir John Maxwell, 2nd Baronet of Nether Pollok (1686-1752), in 1727, seven years after the death of his first wife, Anne.

Lady Barbara had three sons and two daughters with Sir John and was step-mother to his children from his first marriage. She died in 1737 and Sir John later took a third wife. Her stepson John inherited the estate in 1752 but died childless in 1758, leaving Lady Barbara's oldest son Walter to inherit. Walter died in 1761 and his infant son lived only for another nine weeks. The estate then passed to James, another of Lady Barbara's sons, who became the 6th Baronet.
