Miss Elizabeth Reid

Miss Elizabeth D Reid, c 1892, a pastel by E A Walton (1860-1922).

Elizabeth Reid was the younger sister of the influential Glasgow art dealer Alexander Reid (1854-1928). This portrait was exhibited in Manchester and London in 1893 and was presented to Glasgow Museums in 1964 by A J McNeill Reid (the son of Alexander Reid and also an art dealer) and his wife.

E A Walton belonged to the group of young artists known as the Glasgow Boys. The Boys were influenced by painters such as Jules Bastien-Lepage and James McNeill Whistler and Boys began to produce low-key and realistic works in the 1880s, rebelling against the sentimental, cloying art popular in Scotland at the time.
