Summer

Summer, 1897, pencil and gouache on vellum with a lead frame, by Margaret Macdonald (1864-1933).

Summer is shown here as a woman wearing long flowing robes which are decorated with flowers and seeds. At her head are putti (cherubs). The hazy yellows and greens give the image a warm and tranquil feeling.

This work illustrates the softening of Macdonald's style in the late 1890s, as she began to produce more romantic or narrative work and moved away from the "Spook School" style she had previously adopted.
