Winter

Winter, 1898, pencil, watercolour and gouache on vellum with a beaten lead frame by Margaret Macdonald (1864-1933).

In the early 1890s Macdonald, in collaboration with her sister Frances (1874-1921), had produced a series of works depicting the four seasons. A second series made in the late 1890s on the same subject shows how Macdonald's artistic style was developing, moving away from gaunt "Spook School" images towards softer, illustrative works. Winter depicts a woman in a flowing gown with ethereal childlike figures floating above her. The frame is decorated with winter leaves and berries.
