The Grey Iris c 1923, pencil and watercolour by Charles Rennie Mackintosh (1868-1928).
Mackintosh moved to London in 1915, but was unable to find enough work as an architect to support himself and his wife. He turned to painting and later to textile design as ways of earning a living. The watercolours he produced during this period are more complete than his earlier flower paintings and depict cultivated plants rather than wild ones. This watercolour is from c 1923, and must be one of the last paintings Mackintosh worked on before moving to France later that year.
