Embroidered dress c 1860s

A lady's dress of white cotton pique with black embroidery c late 1860s.

The dress is machine embroidered with leaf and zigzag patterns in black wool. This kind of black cord embroidery on white pique was very popular in the 1860s and dresses like this appear in paintings and photographs of the period.

The dress was donated to Glasgow Museums by the Home Economics Department of Queen's College (originally the Glasgow and West of Scotland College of Domestic Science, set up in 1908). It was probably collected by the College as an example of a mid-Victorian dress for their handling collection, to show the cut and embroidery of the time.
