Afternoon Dress c 1934

A printed silk chiffon afternoon dress and bolero jacket stocked by Murielle's of Sauchiehall Street, c 1934.

Murielle's was an exclusive shop and the prices reflected this. For example, in 1936 the shop offered a chiffon bridesmaid's dress for 9.5 guineas (£9.98), in the same year that an afternoon dress was priced at just 45 shillings (£2.25) in a Sauchiehall Street department store.

Shown here is a pale pink chiffon dress with a printed pattern in shades of green, orange, pink, yellow and brown. It is sleeveless, has a plain round neck and a straight, tight bodice decorated with a line of 12 covered buttons down the center front. From the last button an inverted V panel slants down, forming a skirt which falls from this high waist over still narrow hips and gradually flares. Four inverted V panels are added 20 inches from the hem to give the skirt added fullness. A broad chiffon sash of matching material is worn around the natural waistline.

The short bolero jacket has no collar and no fastenings. The front edges are cut away and curve to a high waistline. The large "leg o' mutton" sleeves are elbow length and have tight cuffs which tie at the elbow.
