Cowglen

A view of Cowglen on the Pollok Estate showing trees and a large puddle, photographed by Duncan Brown.

This photograph was probably taken on the morning of Saturday 28 September 1861 to show one of the locations being used for the sham-fight later that day. The sham-fight was organised by the Volunteers of Lanarkshire and Renfrewshire to demonstrate the military competence of the newly raised forces. An audience of several thousand attended to watch the spectacle. Pollok Golf Course was subsequently laid out on the land.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
