Alexander D Robertson

A portrait by Duncan Brown, probably showing Alexander D Robertson (1807-1886).

Robertson worked as an artist and art teacher in Glasgow from the early 1840s. Although he generally worked freelance he taught drawing and painting at the Andersonian University from 1843-1845 and was employed by the Glasgow School of Art from c 1846-1848 until he was dismissed by an Inspector from the Head School in London. Robertson worked predominantly in oil, watercolour and charcoal, producing both portraits and landscapes. His pencil and watercolour views of Glasgow are particularly good.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer who documented life in Glasgow from the 1850s to the 1890s.
