Billeted soldiers, 1919

Billeted soldiers asleep on a floor, 1919.

Engineering unions in Glasgow called a strike on the 27 January 1919 to demand a 40-hours working week. Troops were despatched to the city when the Government received alarmist reports that the city might be on the brink of a Bolshevik uprising. The troops were billeted across the city until it became clear that the situation was under control. The soldiers pictured here are sleeping beneath what appears to be a cartoon prepared for stained glass windows, representing the supposed defence of the Cathedral by members of the Trades' House in 1579. The location is unknown and the editor welcomes suggestions!
