Duncan Brown

A portrait of Duncan Brown as an old man, c 1880s.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer who lived and worked in Glasgow. His earliest images date from the mid-1850s but he retained his enthusiasm for photography all his life, continuing to work in the 1880s and 1890s. Brown did not limit himself to particular topics and his subjects were wide-ranging, including portraits of friends, family, the rich and famous, criminals and workmen as well as images of landscapes, buildings, streetscenes and shipping. A one-time employee of the Glasgow School of Art, his surviving works are now held in the archive there.
