Muirhouses

Muirhouses in Pollokshields, photographed by Duncan Brown c 1880s.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s. He was a member of the Literary and Artistic Club and often went for rambles with the club members. Another member was the writer Hugh MacDonald who in the 1850s described Muirhouses as "a row of one-storeyed and thatched edifices" which stood on the west side of Pollokshaws Road, just beyond what was then the city boundary.

By the time this photograph was taken, the previously thatched cottage roofs had been tiled.
