Haying

Men and women haying, photographed by Duncan Brown, probably in the 1880s.

This field may have been situated near Queen's Park, perhaps in the vicinity of Millbrae Hill. Two horses draw what appears to be a McCormack sail reaper while farm labourers make up stooks of hay. The large Victorian villas in the background seem rather out of place in this rural scene, but developers had been erecting new houses in the Queen's Park area since the 1850s.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
