Polling day

Sir Hugh Shaw-Stewart MP (1854-1942) and his wife Lady Alice on polling day (probably during the General Election of 1886), photographed by Duncan Brown.

Sir Hugh was Unionist MP for East Renfrewshire from 1886 until his defeat in the election of 1906. At that time East Renfrewshire included areas such as Cathcart which were to become parts of Glasgow. He became Lord Lieutenant for Renfrewshire in 1922. His wife was Lady Alice Emma Thynne (d 1942), daughter of the 4th Marquess of Bath, whom he married on 14 November 1883.

Duncan Brown (1819-1897) was a talented amateur photographer whose work documents aspects of Glasgow life from the 1850s until the 1890s.
