Speeches on Glasgow Green

A political rally at Glasgow Green in 1931.

James Maxton (right) and Myer Galpern chat in the background as a woman stands to speak. Maxton was a leading member of the Independent Labour Party (ILP) and MP for Bridgeton from 1922 until 1946.

Myer Galpern was chairman of the Glasgow Federation of the ILP. He stood unsucessfully for election as a councillor in the Cathcart and Partick East wards of the city before being elected in Shettleston in November 1932. Galpern became Glasgow's first Jewish Lord Provost in 1958 and in 1959 was elected the Labour MP for Shettleston. He was knighted in 1960 and awarded a life peerage in 1979.
