The Independent Labour Party was formed in 1893 under the leadership of Keir Hardie. It aimed to be a new national party for the working classes, intending to "secure the collective ownership of the means of production, distribution and exchange". It was affiliated to the Labour Party in 1906 and in 1922 ten ILP members were elected MPs in Glasgow. The ILP split with the national Labour Party in 1932, but most of its MPs remained with the latter and support for the ILP withered.
