It has been estimated that 250,000 people had emigrated from Scotland to Australia by 1900. Many poor families would have travelled in third class accommodation on ships such as the Gulf of Venice, but there were large numbers of more affluent Scots who sailed to run farms, manage businesses and work as administrators there. These men, some accompanied by their families, would have been able to afford to travel first class and take advantage of the "splendid saloon, large state rooms, bath rooms etc" during the long voyage.
