Benjamin Beattie's newsagent's shop at 94 Neptune Street in Govan, summer of 1937.
Elizabeth Craig McGregor stands in front of the shop holding her nephew Thomas Beattie. Behind her are posters with the ominous news headlines of the day - "Mussolini's Reply to Premier" alluding to the Italian Duce's continued defiance of British wishes that Italy should cease to interefere in the Spanish Civil War, and "Bilbao's Heroic Stand" referring to the defence of the city by Spanish Republicans. The city was captured by Nationalist troops loyal to General Franco in June 1937.
