20 Brunswick Street

A gas and electrical engineers shop at 20 Brunswick Street, 18 March 1913. An attractive range of light fittings are displayed in the window.

Sir John A Macdonald, first Prime Minister of Canada, was born in this building in 1815. His family emigrated to Kingston in Ontario five years later. He was articled to a law firm at the age of 15 and four years later had his own legal practice. He supported the Conservative Party, became a local councillor, and in 1844 he was elected the representative for Kingston in the Legislative Assembly of Canada. Macdonald was a strong supporter of the movement for a confederation of Britain's north American provinces and colonies and when the Dominion of Canada was established in 1867 he was appointed its first Prime Minister.
