St George's Cross, early 20th century.
This view looks along Great Western Road with New City Road (subsequently renamed to become the western end of Maryhill Road) leading off to the right. The porticoed building at the gushet, centre, was built in the 1830s as part of the uncompleted Clarendon Place. One of the recently-introduced electric Corporation trams is in the foreground, bound for Barracks Gate in Maryhill with bowler-hatted gents on the top deck enjoying the sunshine. On the right, a shopkeeper struggles to put up awnings to shade his windows.
This area was redeveloped during the 1960s and 1970s. Most of the 19th century buildings were demolished to make way for new housing and access roads and ramps were constructed in connection with the new M8 motorway.
